Shilpa Coorg Featured in Bloomberg Law Article Examining Diversity Issues in Patent Law
Shilpa Coorg was recently featured in the Bloomberg Law article, “Young Female Attorneys Lacking Fair Credit for Work Suffer Later,” authored by Matthew Bultman. The article takes a deep dive into practices commonly seen in patent law and within the broader legal profession that uphold inequality and negatively impact women lawyers and lawyers of color. One such practice identified in the article is when senior lawyers take credit for the work of junior attorneys.
According to Shilpa, crediting only senior attorneys “reinforces the existing power dynamic,” and “isn’t very conducive to change.” However, she notes that the practice is often framed as a way to protect less experienced attorneys and shield them from the pressures associated with signing documents such as patent applications, which can involve technologies worth millions of dollars.
The author examines how the findings cited in the article related to these practices and other areas of bias suggest “a growing body of statistical and anecdotal evidence that female lawyers don’t receive the same credit, or opportunities, for work.”
